A Bit About Me

Everybody has a story and some of mine can be found here but my new journey began in mid 2020 and has taken me in a whole new direction.

After over a decade working in the non-profit charity self help and support group sector, Founding and running my own organisation, and training as a Community Services Support Worker, I have evolved to become a Consultant in this space.

I have added some new elements to my work life, one by becoming a Mental Health Educator for the WA Recovery College Alliance, and the other by starting to work with young adults with intellectual disabilities. This has been profoundly life changing for me. I am challenged, excited, and terrified all at once to be a disabled support worker, working with other disabled people.

I am extremely committed to providing platforms for people living with chronic illness, disabilities and mental health conditions to have a voice, and a place where they feel safe, included, inspired, and excited to look beyond the disadvantages they live with in their daily lives. This includes me too as I have a lived experience of over twelve years now as a "patient", which is how a lot of us are viewed.

So how do I stand out from the crowd? What makes my work so different I think is due to my being someone who lives everyday with disability, a chronic progressive illness that can claim my life at anytime, and an innate understanding of wanting to be seen the same way as everyone else, not just as the "sick" person.

I like fun things, nice things, pretty things, excitement, adventure, just as much as the next person. Being disabled and chronically ill doesn't mean you suddenly had a lobotomy and lost your past, your identity or your education and experience. Yet this is often how I have been made to feel. I have been excluded from a professional setting merely because of my disability.

This was totally unacceptable to me so I sought out people and places who thought the way I do. And boy oh boy have I met some amazing Advocates and Consultants in this space who are a force to be reckoned with.
